Did you get a rejection email with one of these messages?
1099 or 1098 Rejection Email Message: New 2025 IRS Requirement - The TIN Type SSN requires a first and last name. A correction is not required. Go to your Payer or Recipient profile to add the Last Name and save the update.
W-2 Rejection Email Message: SSA rejection reason: ERROR: Employee Last Name, this field cannot be blank. Please make the appropriate updates to your form before resubmitting. A correction is not needed.
Why did my forms get rejected this year when they were accepted last year?
The IRS and SSA are cracking down on how we submit TINs and Names. If an SSN is used, then we have to submit a First and Last Name.
That's annoying. Now what do I do to get my forms accepted?
We agree! We've credited your account with 1 eFile credit for each rejected form. The fix is pretty quick. Find the Payer or Recipient using an SSN without a Last Name and click Edit. If you're not sure, open the form (Forms page > Actions > Edit) and click View Errors.
Adding a Last Name to a Payer Using an SSN
Navigate to the Payers page
Click on the payer's name in your Payers list
Click Edit
Update the First and Last Name fields to the person associated with the SSN. You can move the business name to Payer Name Line 2.
Click Save and all the forms associated with that Payer will be updated.
You can now resubmit your form for eFiling. As long as you are submitting the same number of forms as were rejected, this transaction should be free.
