Rejection Reason: “If Person Name has a value, then TIN and Person Name must match IRS records.”

What to do when your forms are rejected because "Person Name" didn't match the IRS records

Updated this week

“If Person Name has a value, then TIN and Person Name must match IRS records.” This means the SSN and name you entered on your forms do not match what the IRS has for that Tax ID and name. You do not need to file a correction. Just update the forms and resend them. We have added credits to your account, so you will not be charged at checkout.

This message means your Payer / Employer / Lender used an SSN, and the name you provided does not match the IRS's records for the name associated with that SSN.

The IRS has modernized its filing system and now checks for a name and Tax ID match when we submit your forms. This is why you may be seeing an error for a name and TIN you've used before.

Update your payer record with the First and Last Name of the person associated with the SSN. If you have a sole proprietorship, you can enter the DBA name in Name Line 2.
