Quick version: On the Forms page, click Add a new form, choose the earlier tax year, and fill in the form as usual.
The steps are the same as for any new form. You just pick a different tax year.
What should I know before I start?
A saved previous-year form is final. You can’t eFile, correct, or edit it. You can only print it.
A previous year only appears in the Tax year choices if you’ve already created forms in that year.
Once a new version of Tax Forms Helper is released, prior tax years switch to view-and-print only. You can’t add new payers or file forms for those years.
Create a form for a previous tax year
Warning: once you click Save & Continue, you can’t eFile, correct, or edit a previous-year form. Check your entries before you save.
Go to Forms in the left menu.
Click Add a new form.
Under Tax year, choose the year you need. Helper remembers your choice for next time, so switch it back when you return to current-year forms.
Under Form type, choose the form you need, such as 1099-NEC Nonemployee Compensation.
Click Continue.
Under Issuer — (Payer), click the picker and choose the issuer. You can search by name or TIN.
Under Recipient, choose the recipient or employee.
Fill in the form boxes. Required boxes are marked with an asterisk (*).
Click Save & Continue. To start another form for the same year, click Save & Add another.
Tip: Check the tax year at the top of the form before you save, so you know you’re working in the right year.
Can I eFile a previous-year form?
You can create forms for the previous 2 tax years. The Tax year choices in Add a new form show only the years you can create forms for. A previous year only shows up there if you’ve already created forms in it.
Can I correct a previous-year form?
Corrections to previous-year forms filed through the IRS FIRE system aren’t available in Helper yet. They’re expected in 2027. For other prior-year changes, such as an issuer’s EIN, contact the IRS or a tax professional.
How do I find forms from a previous year?
Use the year selector at the top of the Forms page to switch to the tax year you want. It lists every tax year on your account. See How to View Previous Years’ Forms.
Want to bring last year’s forms into this year instead?
Use New tax year copy on a form’s Actions menu, or Copy forms from last year, to copy last year’s forms into the current filing year. See Copy forms from last year.
For box details, see How to Add, Edit, or Delete a 1099, a W-2, or a 1098.
