The IRS asks for different corrective actions based on the type of error you’ve made.

You can find detailed instructions at the IRS website, but here is a step-by-step guide to correcting a 1099 Form after filing an incorrect Form. For example, if you filed a 1099-NEC but should have filed a 1099-MISC, simply follow the steps below.

Note: Forms paper filed will follow a separate process from forms eFiled.

Start by navigating to the Forms page.

Next, find the 1099 Filing you’d like to correct. In this case, we’re correcting a 1099-NEC.

Next, under the “Actions” menu, select “Correction.”

You'll see the following screen and click "Create Correction."

Paper Filers:

From the next dropdown menu, select “Incorrect Form.”

eFilers:

From the next dropdown menu, select “A return was filed when one should not have been/Zero out my form”

Paper Filers: Choose the correct form from the dropdown menu.

Paper Filers: Next, click “Create Correction.”

Paper Filers: You'll see the following screen and click "Continue."

Paper Filers: Click “Complete Correction” when you’re satisfied.

Paper Filers & eFilers: You’ll see the following screen and choose from the options. Here, we're returning to the Forms page.

Paper Filers: You'll see the new 1099-NEC in your Forms page.

eFilers: Your old form will appear with the Correction label

Paper Filers: If you want to view your original 1099-MISC, select “View Original” in the dropdown menu on your Forms page.

eFilers:

If you didn't already eFile your form on the What's Next page. Select your form and click Checkout & File.

After you eFile the correction, you will now need to make a new original filing by clicking Add New and selecting the correct form type. eFile that form as well.

You’ll receive an email confirming your form(s) were processed by the IRS; however, it may take the IRS up to 4 weeks to process during periods of high demand.

Good on you! You’ve corrected a 1099 form for an incorrect form filing.
