How to change your two-factor authentication phone number or email

Send your sign-in verification codes to a different phone number or email address.

Quick version: In the left menu, click the gear icon (My Account), then Security. Under Two-factor authentication, click Change method, choose SMS or Email, enter the new number or address, and confirm it with the 6-digit code we send there.

Adams Tax Forms Helper sends a verification code every time you sign in. Update where it goes when you get a new phone number or email address, or if you’d prefer codes by text instead of email (or the other way around).

Before you start: Have the new phone or email inbox handy. You’ll need to enter a code sent there.

Common questions

Does this change my login email or where I get notifications?

No. This only changes where your sign-in verification codes go. Your login email and notification email stay the same.

It says my destination can’t be the same as my backup recovery contact.
Your verification codes and your backup recovery method need to go to different places, so you can still get in if you lose one. Use a different number or address, or change your backup method first.

It says “The code is incorrect or has expired.”
Check that you entered the newest code. If it’s too old, click Resend code.

It says “Please wait before requesting another code.”
You’ve asked for several codes in a short time. Wait a few minutes, then try again.

Can I switch from email codes to text messages?
Yes. Click Change method, choose SMS, and enter your mobile number.
